SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • From the railway station I took a rickshaw to go home.

  • It is decided that I have to pay Rs. X for the first kilometre and for each kilometre Rs. Y for the next.

  • For 10 kilometres the fare is Rs. 40 and for 16 kilometres fare is Rs. 58.

TO DETERMINE

The fare for the first kilometre.

EVALUATION

Here it is given that he has to pay Rs. X for the first kilometre and for each kilometre Rs. Y for the next.

So fare for 10 kilometers

= Fare for first kilometre + Fare for 9 kilometers

= X + 9Y

So fare for 16 kilometers

= Fare for first kilometre + Fare for 15 kilometers

= X + 15Y

So by the given condition

X + 9Y = 40 - - - - - (1)

X + 15Y = 58 - - - - - (2)

Equation 2 - Equation 1 gives

6Y = 18

 \sf{ \implies \: Y = 3}

From Equation 1 we get

X = 40 - 9Y

 \sf{ \implies \: X = 40 - 27}

 \sf{ \implies \: X = 13}

FINAL ANSWER

Hence the fare for the first kilometre = Rs. 13
