As the formula of bleaching powder is Ca(OCl)2 so it has odor of chlorine. Actually bleaching powder is just an arrangement to keep and storage chlorine and then use it in bleaching.

Bleaching powder is chemically , calcium oxychloride ( caOCI2 ) . Bleaching powder can be manufactured by using two types of manufacturing plants. Backmann's plant and Hasenclever plant . It is manufactured by passing chlorine gas over slaked lime .

Ca(OH)2 + CI2 [tex]\rightarrow CaCaOCI2 + H2O

Bleaching powder is a yellowish white powder with a strong smell of chlorine. When exposed to air , bleaching powder gives a smell of chlorine.

This is bcoz bleaching powder reacts with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to produce Calcium Carbonate and chlorine gas.

CaOCI2 + Co2 [tex]\rightarrow CaCo3 + CI2

Hope it helps..
