Evans and his gang had made quite an elaborate and elusive plan for Evans's escape. It was not McLeery who had been injured, it was Evans disguised as McLeery who pretended to be injured. McLeery was an accomplice of Evans; he had brought along a suit and blood that he gave to Evans during the examination. When Evans demanded a blanket, he was putting on the suit. After escorting the original McLeery out pf prison, when he went to have a look at Evans, he found McLeery injured on the chair. In panic everyone thought Evans had been escorted out of prison, but the truth was Evans had remained in the prison, disguised as McLeery, who pretended to know where Evans had gone. Thus, disguised Evans was also taken out of the prison by Detective Carter.
