In reality, the men had actually gone for hunting and were then returning home. Having believed Vera's story, Mr Nuttel thought he was seeing the ghost of those men and ran away as fast as he could. The statement made by Mrs Sappleton too is ironic as she says, 'one would think he had seen a ghost'.
