Step-by-step explanation:

Let the initial population be 100

First year it increases by 100 of 15% = 100×15/100=15

=>100+15=115

Next year it decreases by 15% of 115

=115×15/100 =69/4=17.25

=> 115-17.25 = 97.75

decrease=100-97.75=2.25

decrease % = (2.25/100)×100%=2.25%

OR

On the face of it, it would seem to be a net change of 0. But let's work it out and see that it isn't!

We start with a population - let's call that P.

It increases by 15%, so that is:

1.15

P

And now it decreases by 15% - we can do that by saying the population is now 85% of what it was:

0.85

(

1.15

)

P

=

.9775

P

This means the population is lower than it started with and is lower by:

1

0.9775

=

0.0225

%
