1). A parachute is a device used to slow the motion of an object through an atmosphere by creating drag (or in the case of ram-air parachutes, aerodynamic lift).

2). Parachutes are usually made out of light, strong fabric, originally silk, now most commonly nylon.

3). Although a complete kit of parachutes can run about $2,000 at the low end (used) to $10,000 at the high end for a new, state-of-the-art kit, if you plan on doing a lot of jumps over the next few years, you can save some money this way.

4). Round-type parachutes. Used in the military (think any Normandy Invasion war film) and as emergency parachutes, these simply rely on drag to slow a descent, rather than having any lift.
