Modem is a hardware device that enable a computer to communicate(send and receive signals) via telephone lines.

  • The term 'Modem' is the short form for 'Modulator-Demodulator'. The modem converts Digital data to Analog audio signals and vice-versa, over a telephone line. This kind of a modem is also called as a dial-up modem.
  • Nowadays, a modem connects a Computer or Router to a broadband connection. Such a modem is called as a broadband modem. Following are some types of computer modems:
  • Onboard Modem: These type of modems are built onto the Motherboard. These cannot be removed but can be disabled.
  • Internal Modem: This modem connects to a PCI slot inside a latest desktop computer.
  • External Modem: Such modems are connected to a computer externally via a USB or serial port.
  • Removable Modem: These are not much in use nowadays. Removable modems, as the name suggests can be added when needed and removed otherwise.
