The Non-Cooperation movement was started because British were increasing the import of British goods into India. The British goods were of low quality and cheap. The British imposed high taxes on the Indian goods which increased their price, thus people were unable to buy them. So, they had to buy the low quality British goods. This resulted in the shut down of a no. of factories which ultimately resulted in the loss of livelihoods of thousands of people. So, Gandhiji started the Non-Cooperation movement . It's main purpose was not to cooperate with the govt. but by non- violence. People burnt British clothes and many other events took place.
Gandhiji called off the Non-Cooperation movement because some people set fire to a police station in Chauri Chaura in U.P. which resulted in the death of about 20 policemen. The movement was taking a violent form. Gandhiji hated violence. So, as soon as the event of Chauri Chaura took place, he called off the Non-Cooperation movement in 1922.
