Let the number of ungulates be x

So,

The number of carnivores = (x+7)

The number of rodents = (x+7) +2 = (x+9)

Total available species = 40

According to the question ,

=> x+(x+7)+(x+9) = 40

=> 3x+16 = 40

=> 3x = 40-16

=> 3x = 24

=> x = 8

Therefore , there are 8 ungulates in the forest
