Read the paragraph carefully and answer the following questions:
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It is a part of the Himalayan Range. For
hundreds of years nobody succeeded in reaching the summit. The people of Tibet called it
"Chomolungma", meaning "father of mountains". They believed that strange, wild creatures wandered
about the snowcapped mountains. Many people thought it would be impossible to measure or climb
Mount Everest. The height of Mt. Everest is 8,882 metres. It is named after George Everest, the man who
wanted to measure it. In 1953, two men of strong will and determination ventured out to climb to the
summit. One of them was Edmund Hillary, a New Zealander, and the other was Sherpa Tenzing, a skilled
mountain climber of Nepal.
