In this activity, we are using sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid

 

Arrange the apparatus as shown below

 

Sodium carbonate is added to hydrochloric acid in a boiling tube which is immediately stoppered.

 

A delivery tube from the first boiling tube in dipped into limewater in the second boiling tube.

 

Limewater is used to test for carbon dioxide. The presence of carbon dioxide is determined when a white precipitate forms.

 



Reaction in the first boiling test tube:

 

Na2CO3 + 2HCl = 2NaCl + CO2 + H2O

 



Reaction in the second boiling tube:

 

CO2 + Ca(OH)2 = CaCO3 + H2O

 


The white precipitate is CaCO3
