SOLUTION

TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT OPTION

The sum of five consecutive numbers is 20. What is the sum of first three consecutive numbers

(1) 11

(2) 12

(3) 5

(4) 9

EVALUATION

Let the five consecutive numbers are

x , x + 1 , x + 2 , x + 3 , x + 4

So by the given condition

x + x + 1 + x + 2 + x + 3 + x + 4 = 20

 \implies \sf{5x +10 = 20 }

 \implies \sf{5x  = 10 }

 \implies \sf{x  = 2}

So the numbers are 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6

So the first three numbers are 2 , 3 , 4

Hence the sum of first three consecutive numbers

= 2 + 3 + 4

= 9

FINAL ANSWER

Hence the correct option is

(4) 9
