Given:

4x + 6y = 22 ......... (i)

x + y = 5 ........ (ii)

To find:

The value of x - 2

Solution:

We will first multiply equation (ii) by 4 throughout, so we get

x + y = 5 ] × 4

⇒ 4x + 4y = 20 ...... (iii)

Then by subtracting eq. (iii) from (i), we get

4x + 6y = 22

4x + 4y = 20

-    -         -

--------------------

    2y = 2

--------------------

∴ y = \frac{2}{2} = 1

By substituting y = 1 in eq. (ii), we get

x + 1 = 5

⇒ x = 5 - 1

⇒ x = 4

Now, we will substitute the value of x to find the value of (x - 2).

∴ x - 2

= 4 - 2

= 2

Thus, the value of (x - 2) is 2.
