Given : 5 .  ^4 P_r = 2 .  ^5 P_r

To Find : Value of r

Solution:

^n P_r = \dfrac{n!}{(n-r)!}

5 .  ^4 P_r = 2 .  ^5 P_r

=> 5 . 4!/(4 - r)!   = 2.  5!/(5 - r)!

=> 5. 4 * 3 * . . . (4 - r + 1)   = 2.  5* 4 * . . .  (5 - r + 1)

=>  5. 4 * 3 * . . . (5 - r + 1) (4 - r + 1)   = 2.  5* 4 * . . . (5 - r + 1)

5. 4 * 3 * . . . (5 - r + 1)  gets cancelled out

=   (4 - r + 1) = 2.

=> 5 - r = 2

=> r = 3

Verification :

5 .  ^4 P_3 = 2 .  ^5 P_3

5. ^4 P_4 =5. \dfrac{4!}{(4-3)!}=5!

2. ^5 P_4 =2. \dfrac{5!}{(5-3)!}=2. \dfrac{5!}{2!} = 5!
