Consider the equilibrium
| Ni(s) + 4CO(g) - Ni(CO)4(g) ; Kp = 0.125 atm
If equal number of moles of CO and Ni(CO)4 (ideal gases) are mixed in a small container fitted with a
piston, find the maximum total pressure (in atm) to which this mixture must be brought in order to just
precipitate out metallic Ni ?

The maximum total pressure (in atm) to which this mixture must be brought in order to just  precipitate out metallic Ni  is equal to 4 atm.

  • A reaction proceeds in the backward direction only if Kq>Kp.
  • Kq=P(Ni(CO)4)/P(CO)⁴
  • Let total pressure to which this mixture is brought be P atm.
  • P(Ni(CO)4)=P/2 and P(CO)=P/2 (since equal moles of both are present)
  • Kq = 8/P³
  • 8/P³>0.125⇒P>4 atm.
