Panchayati Raj refers to the system of local self-government in India. It was introduced by a constitutional amendment in 1992, although it is based upon the traditional panchayat system of the Indian subcontinent. The Panchayat raj, originating from the Indian subcontinent is found mainly in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The word raj means “rule” and panchayat means “assembly”(ayat) of five (panch). Students can refer to Chapter 5 of CBSE Class 6 Civics.
