Answer:

An IAS officer or District Magistrate heads the district of a state. While SDM stands for SUB DIVISIONAL MAGISTRATE. The District Magistrate is assisted by the SDM who is below the level of district. Every district is divided into sub divisions and each sub division is headed by a SDM.
