Three distinct approaches for the pursuit and maintenance of peace are as follows:-

  • First approach emphasises on centrality to states, respect and sovereignty and treats competition amongst nations as fact of life. A lot of emphasis is given to proper management of competition, through containment of possible conflict, through inter-state arrangement like balance of power.
  • Second approach emphasis on positive presence and possibilities of inter-dependence. It underscores the growing social and economic cooperation among nations. Such cooperation is expected to temper state sovereignity and promote international understanding consequently reducing global conflict and leading to better prospects of peace.
  • Third approach considers the state system to be a passing phase of human history. It takes about emergence of a supra-national order and views the fostering of a global community as the guarantee to peace. The seeds of such community are found in the expanding interactions and coalitions across the state boundary that involve diverse non-government actors, MNC's and people's movement. The proponents of this approach argues that the ongoing process of globalization would further erode the already diminished primacy and sovereignity of the state, thereby creating conditions to the establishment of world peace.
