Roads are a general paths for foot and wheeled transportation, usually improved by grading, provision for all-weather use, drainage, of stone, bituminous, concrete or other compacted construction. The road, therefore, need not be only for motorized or wheeled vehicles, if that is the point of the question.

Roads are typically the direct connection from homes and residences to other dwellings, businesses etc and provide the connection to and between towns and cities. There is no substitute for roads.
