Lines of Symmetry:

  • The line of symmetry is the line which passes through the center of the object or any geometrical shape.
  • It is known as the axis or imaginary line of the object.
  • In geometry, we are familiar with the term symmetry which is defined as a balanced and a proportionate similarity found in two halves of an object.
  • Where one-half is the mirror image of the other half.
  • For example, if we cut an apple in two equal halves, then the one piece of apple is said to be in symmetry with another.
  • One more good example is to imagine if we cut an equilateral triangle into two equal halves, then the two triangles which are formed after the intersection is the right-angled triangles.
  • Few more examples such as  circle, square, rectangle, can also be considered for line symmetry.

(a) Isosceles right-angled triangle has exactly one line of symmetry.

(b) Rectangle has exactly two lines of symmetry.

(c) An equilateral triangle has three lines of symmetry.

(d) A Square has four lines of symmetry.

(e) A regular pentagon has 5 sides and 5 lines of symmetry.

(f) A circle has infinite or no lines of symmetry. It is symmetrical along all its diameters.

(6) Draw a line segment and divide the line exactly into 2 equal parts. Draw the line of symmetry.
