Luminous objects are objects that have / exhibit their own light. Non-luminous objects are objects that don't have/exhibit their own light and/or reflect light. Examples of luminous objects are the sun, flame in a lamp, tube light. Examples of non luminous objects are the earth, moon,a piece of cloth etc.

Put simply, it’s an object that doesn’t emit visible light.

Typically, if it’s being asked about in an academic setting, it’ll have to do with differentiating between objects that emit light and those that reflect it. A common misconception about the Moon, for example, is that it emits light, which would be what makes it appear bright in the sky. Instead, it just reflects the light from the Sun, and only appears as bright as it is because it receives a very large amount of light from the Sun. If the object emits light (like the Sun in the example), it is described as luminous, whereas if it reflects light, it is described as non-luminous. Other examples of non-luminous objects are things like wood and metals, most living things (that are not bio luminescent, meaning living things that emit light), and glass or mirrors.

Hopefully that helps u
