Longitudinal waves are also called compressional waves or compression waves, because they produce compression and rarefaction when traveling through a medium.

In longitudinal wave the particles of the medium vibrate normal to the direction of propagation of wave. While in surface wave the particles of the medium vibrate along the direction of propagation of wave.
