First world war or The Great war started in 1914 and continued till 1918. The war was fought between the allies( France, Britain, Russia,Serbia,Italy, and USA) and the central powers (Austria-Hungary empire, Germany and Balkan States).
The main reason that triggered the first world war was the assassination of the Austrian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand by Bosnian Revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip on 28th June, 1914. Some other reasons were the triple entente in 1914,Anglo-Russian Entente in 1907, The dual Alliance in 1879, etc. These alliances left the countries with nothing but to resort to war.
The war ended with the defeat of the central powers under the leadership of Germany. This war claimed the lives of more than 9 million people. It ended with signing of the Treaty of Versailles under which Germany had to limit its army up to 10,000 people, make territorial concessions (by giving the area of Alsace-Lorraine to France), and make monetary reparations to the winning allies.
The other consequences of the war were that it paved a way for the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, led to Economic depression in Germany, Rising of Trade unions in Europe, etc.
The winning allies were made to give monetary compensation for the losses that occured during the war by Germany.
