Given :-

• Cost of 5 pencils and 7 pens = Rs. 50
• Cost of 7 pencils and 5 pens = Rs. 46

To Find :-

• Cost of each pen & pencil.

Solution :-

Let the cost of one pencil be x and the cost of one pen be y.

A.T.Q,

⇒ 5x + 7y = 50.......( 1 )

Also,

⇒ 7x + 5y = 46.......( 2 )

Multiplying ( 1 ) with 7, we get,

⇒ 35x + 49y = 350......( 3 )

Multiplying ( 2 ) with 5, we get,

⇒ 35x + 25y = 230.......( 4 )

Subtracting ( 4 ) from ( 3 ) gives,

⇒ 24y = 120

⇒ y = 120/24

⇒ y = 5

Substituing value of y in ( 1 ) gives,

⇒ 5x + 7 × 5 = 50

⇒ 5x = 15

⇒ x = 15/5

⇒ x = 3

Therefore,

• Cost of one pencil (x) = Rs. 3
• Coat of one pen (y) = Rs. 5
