If we do not take immediate steps to check
global warming, we will have to pay a heavy
price for our carelessness.
During the last hundred years, the earth has
warmed up slightly, raising the average sea
level by about 30 cm. The average global
temperature could rise another 2°C by 2100.
Some of the ice at the North and South
Poles would melt and low-lying coastal cities would get flooded. Some tiny
islands in the Indian Ocean have already been evacuated because of flooding.
People living in New York, London and New Orleans may be the next to feel
the effects of global warming as they live within 80 km of a coast.
Global warming might alter climate patterns in the world, bringing floods to
some areas and droughts to others. Warm climate zones might move north
in the northern hemisphere and south in the southern hemisphere, forcing
farmers to move to places where crops can grow. Plants and animals would
also possibly suffer through the extinction of some species.
If global warming continues at this rate, the world would be a completely
different and a difficult place to live in.
