ANSWER

1)Friction occurs because no surface is perfectly smooth. Rougher surfaces have more friction between them. Heavier objects also have more friction because they press together with greater force

2)A smooth surface has smaller hills and valleys. There are also electrostatic attractions between surfaces, but these are weaker than the physical barriers to sliding. Liquids such as water and oil reduce friction because they keep the two surfaces from contacting each other.

3)So overall, motion and interference of matter are needed equally for friction, which is held together by the force of gravity. Without gravity, everything would have fly away in the universe, and the friction would not have exist. Hence, friction is dependent on gravity.

4)Friction DOES NOT depend on the mass of the body. It depends on the normal force and the roughness of the surface in contact. When a body is placed on the ground, the mass of the body (weight= mass*acceleration due to gravity) comes into play for the normal force from the ground.

5)Without friction, materials would have almost no resistance to shearing forces and the world would become a formless, homogeneous, featureless blob. Instantly. The only things that could cause variations on the planet would be gravity and the laws of thermodynamics.

hope this helps you.
