The quantity of petrol stored in storage tanks by the refineries, bulk oil terminals / depots, bulk consumers and petrol pumps is measured by taking the dip of the product in the tank. By “dip”, we mean the height of the product in the tank. While taking the dip, generally, the temperature is also measured using a thermometer.

These tanks are calibrated and calibration charts are available.

In some cases, the volume is converted to a standard temperature such as 15o C so as to eliminate the effect to temperature on the volume of the product. ASTM tables are available for his purpose.
