Congress had ignored the Dalits for a long because for the following reasons,

  • From around the 1930s, the people who were called 'untouchables' began to call themselves 'Dalits'.
  • Congress had ignored Dalits because of the fear of offending the conservative high-caste Hindus.
  • The father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi had declared that swaraj(self-rule) would not come if untouchability remained among the people.
  • That is when Congress had started including Dalits.
