Two cars left at an intersection at the same time, one heading south and the other heading east. Later they were exactly 95 miles apart. The car heading west had gone 38 miles less than twice as far as the car heading south. How far had each traveled?

Let, the car heading south travel x mile and car heading south travel 2x - 38mile.

Distance between both car = 95 mile

x mile + 2x - 38 mile = 95 mile

x mile + 2x mile = 95 mile + 38 mile

3x mile = 133mile

x = 133mile/3

x = 44.33mile

Distance traveled by car heading south

= x

=44.33mile

<font color = blue>

Distance traveled by car heading east =2x-38mile

= 2 × 44.33mile - 38 mile

= 88.66mile - 38mile

= 50.66mile

Step-by-step explanation:

Let, distance travelled by car heading East from the point of intersection be x

And, distance travelled by car heading south from the point of intersection be y

A. T. Q.

x+y =95 ... (i)

So, x= 95-y

And, x = 2y - 38

x - 2y = - 38 ...(ii)

Putting value of x in (ii)

(95 - y) - 2y = - 38

- 3y = - 95 - 38

3y = 133

y = 44.33

Putting value of y in (i)

x + 44.33 = 95

x = 95 - 44.33

x = 50.67
