The functions of auxins in plants are as follows :-

Θ The most important function of the auxins is growth in plant body .

→ The auxins promote growth by the process of cell elongation .

→ The cell wall gets increased .

→ The number of cells does not increase .

→ However the length of the cell increases .

→ Hence this results in growth .

Θ Auxins play a vital role in apical dominance .

→ Apical buds dominate over the lateral buds.

→ This is known as apical dominance .

→ Auxins promote apical dominance .

Θ Auxins promote parthenocarpy

→ Formation of fruits without fertilization is called parthenocarpy .

→ Such fruits are termed as parthenocarpic fruits .

→ Auxins help in inducing parthenocarpy .

Θ Auxins delay the falling of leaves .

→ Another function of auxin is that it delays the falling of leaves .

→ Falling of leaves is called abscission .

AUXIN

1) It is an plant growth hormone.

Plant hormone are produced in higher plants and controls the growth and other physiological functions of the plants from secretion and are required in a very less amount. They maintains chemical coordination for plants.

2)Auxin is synthesized at the shoot tips or in the apex of the plants and helps to grow the cells longer. When light is coming from one side of the plant, auxin diffuses towards the shady side of the shoot.

This concentrations of Auxin stimulates the cells to grow longer on the side of the shoot which is away from the light and promotes PHOTOTROPISM.

3)Auxin promotes cell elongation and also helps in growth of tendril around a support.

4)Auxin participates in hydrotropism and geotropism also.

5)It helps in inducing both growth of pre-existing roots and adventitious root formation in plants.

6)It stimulates the ethelene formation in plants which is also an plant hormone that helps in ripening of fruits ans leafs.

7)Auxin helps in formation of flowers in plants.

8)When it is secreted in high amount then it induces the formation of ethylene which can induce femaleness of flowers in some plants.
