53. A spring balance whose spring can have a spring can
have a maximum extension of 20 cm, can sustaina
maximum load of 20 km within its elastic limit on
the surface of the earth. Now the same balance is
taken to the moon. Given that can = 6 what
is the maximum mass of the load that can be attached
to the balance to have half its maximum extension?

The maximum mass of 60 Kg can be attached  to the balance.

Explanation:

  • We know that F = Kx ----(1)
  • Acceleration on the moon due to gravity.
  • Now put the value of
  • g(E) / 6   for g(m) .---------(2)
  • By Dividing the value obtained in equation (3) by equation (2) we get the mass of 60 Kg.
  • Thus this gives the maximum mass of the load that can be attached to the balance to have half its maximum extension.
