GIVEN :

Equations :

5x + 3y = 6 and 3x + 2y = 24

We can find x and y using elimination method.

=> 5x + 3y = 6 ---- × 2

=> 3x + 2y = 24 ----- × 3

------------------------

=> 10x + 6y = 12

=> 9x + 6y = 72

(-)

-------------------------

=> x = - 60

Substitute x in any equation to find x

=> 5x + 3y = 6

=> 5(-60) + 3y = 6

=> -300 + 3y = 6

=> 3y = 6 + 300

=> 3y = 306

=> y = 306/3

=> y = 102

Therefore, values of x and y are -60 and 102 respectively.

Hi there !!

There are many methods to find the value of x and y.

  • Substitution (by this ↓)

  • Elimination

  • Cross multiplication

5x+3y=6---(1)

3x+2y=24 ---(2)

From equation (1),

x =  \frac{6 - 3y}{5}  -  -  -  - (3)

Substitute x in equation (2)

3( \frac{6 - 3y}{5} ) + 2y = 24 \\  \\ 18 - 9y + 10y = 120 \\  \\ y = 120 - 18 \\  \\ y = 102

Put y in equation (3)

x = 6-3y/5

6-3(102)/5= 6-306/5

= -300/5

x= -60

Verification

5x+3y=6

5(-60)+3(102)=-300+306=6
