(1) he placed a ball on an inclined plane and observed that the ball rolled downwards and kept on rolling after it leaves the inclined plane.
(2) he now placed a ball on a horizontal plane and observed that the ball did not move at all.
His conclusion: if a body is in motion or at rest it continues to be in motion or at rest unless compelled by some external force.
This is called Inertia and is also the first law of motion
