i.e 54 litre milk and 14 litre water

X litre of water is added to get new mixture in ratio 3:1

 \frac{milk}{water}   = \frac{54}{14 + x}  =  \frac{3}{1}

54 = 42 + 3x

X = 4 litre

(or)

54:14

To get new mixture we only add water. So milk is 54 in final solution also.

 \frac{ 54}{3}  \times 1 = 18 \: litre

Hence water in final solution = 18 litre

water added = 18 - 14 = 4 litre
