7. A pure substance consist of single type of particles. Mixture consists of more than one kind of pure form of matter.

Mixture can be separated by physical methods but pure substances specially compounds cannot be separated into

chemical constituents by physical methods. Pure substances has same composition through out. Soil and soft drinks

are mixtures. Mixtures can be separated by various methods depending upon nature of substance present in it.

Solution is a homogenous mixture.

a) Name the process by which pure NaCl (Sodium Chloride) can be obtained from salt solution.

b) What are alloys – compounds or mixtures?

c)What is size of particles in solution?

d) What is solute and solvent in cold drinks?

Answer:

a) Pure salt can be obtained from mineral halite. Sodium chloride can be obtained by mining the deposits and brine solution is obtained by passing water into deposits. Hence, the salt get dissolved then the solution is pumped up.

b)Compounds

c) In a true solution particle size is less than 1nm or 0.001 micrometres.

d) In aerated or carbonated drinks, the solvent is water and solute is carbon dioxide gas and flavorings (including the sweetener).

Answer:

Mixtures can be separated into pure substances by physical methods. A pure substance is one with uniform and definite compositions. Pure substances can be divided into two groups – elements and compounds. The individual components of a mixture can be physically separated from each other. Chemical compounds are very different from mixtures: The elements in a chemical compound can only be separated by destroying the compound.Pure substances are either elements or compounds. Elements can NOT be separated into other types of matter (physically or chemically). Therefore, elements are pure substances. Ex: Hydrogen gas is a pure substance, as it is made up of only Hydrogen atoms or molecules.Heterogeneous Mixtures

A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture of two or more chemical substances (elements or compounds), where the different components can be visually distinguished and easily separated by physical means.
