4. no change with blue and red litmus paper
5. not react with NaHCO3
Ethanoic Acid
1. smell of vinegar
2. melting point is 290K
3. sour in taste
4. litmus paper blue to red

Ethanol:(1) It has a pleasant
odour.
(2)No reaction takes
place with metal
carbonates.
CH3CH2OH + Na2CO3 =No
reaction
(3)When it is oxidised by oxidising agents such as alkaline KMno4 (Potassium permanganate) or acidified K2Cr2O7(Potassium di chromate), it turns into ethanoic acid.
Ethanoic acid:(1)It has a vinegar like smell.
(2)It produces water, carbondioxide and salt when react with metal carbonates and metal hydrogen carbonates.
CH3COOH + Na2CO3= 2CH3COONa+H2O+CO2
(3)When it is oxidised, more action takes place.
