A gland around 6 inches long which is located in the abdomen is called Pancreas.

Functions of Pancreas :-

  1. Exocrine Function
  2. Endocrine Function

EXOCRINE FUNCTIONS :-

The exocrine glands of the pancreas are responsible for the digestion of food. They produce different enzymes which have different purposes. Let us discuss these enzymes in details.

  • Enzymes like trypsin and chymotrypsin helps in the digestion of protein.
  • Enzymes like amylase helps in the digestion of carbohydrates.
  • Enzymes like lipase helps in breaking down fats.

ENDOCRINE FUNCTION :-

The endocrine glands of the pancreas secrete two important hormones namely insulin and glucagon. Insulin lowers the blood sugar level whereas glucagon raises the blood sugar level. For a proper functioning of the body organs, an adequate amount of blood sugar level is needed by the body. So, these two hormones maintain a correct balance of blood sugar level in the body.
