Given : Ajay and Atul have been asked to determine the potential energy of a ball of  mass m kept on a table as shown in the figure.

To Find : i) What is potential energy of ball with respect to Ajay?

ii) What is potential energy of ball with respect to Atul?

iii) What do you conclude from this?​

Solution:

PE = potential Energy = mgh

potential energy of ball with respect to Ajay  = mgh₁

potential energy of ball with respect to Atul  = mgh₂

The  heights of the ball with respect to Ajay  and Atul are different.

So the potential  energy with respect to them will be  different.

conclusion from this is that potential energy is relative
