Concept:

Mean = μ = np

Where n = number of trials; p = probability of success; q = (1-p) = probability of failure

Calculation:

Given: Mean = μ = np = 12

∴ Variance = σ2 = npq = 4

⇒ 4 = np (1−p) = 12(1−p) 

 ⇒ 4/12 = (1−p) 

⇒ (1 – p) = 1/3

⇒ p = 1 – 1/3

∴ p = 2/3

Again; μ = np = 12

∴ n = 12/p = 12 × (3/2) = 18
