Hey,

Solids generally are rigid in nature, i.e they are strong and cannot be broken, like iron.

However, chalk being a solid is an exception. The intermolecular space is high in a chalk. This means that the particles are arranged loosely and the bond between them is weak.

This enables us to easily break a chalk piece into small particles by hammering, while a price of iron cannot be broken easily.
