A pole is x metres long, is broken into two parts. one part is 5 metres long.

To find : what is the length of the other part ?

if the other part is 6 metres long write an equation to find the value of x.

solution : length of pole = x metres

⇒length of 1st part + length of 2nd part = x

⇒5 + length of 2nd part = x

⇒length of 2nd part = (x - 5) metres .....(1)

again the other part is 6 metres long.

it means length of 2nd part = (x - 5) = 6 [ from equation (1) . ]

⇒x = 5 + 6

⇒x = 11 metres

Therefore the value of x is 11 metres.
