Given Figure shows a small ball of mass m held at rest  by means of two light and inextensible strings.  The tensions in the inclined string at the instant  shown and just after cutting the horizontal string  are respectively

  • Now before cutting we have
  • Since there is alternate interior angles, theta 1 = theta 2
  • Now we have T1 cos theta = mg
  •          So T1 = mg / cos theta
  • Since the string is similar T1 = T2
  • Now after cutting we have
  • Since mg sin theta acts in the horizontal direction, we have mg cos theta acting downwards.
  • Therefore T1 = mg cos theta.
  • So it is considered as mg cos theta always acting with angle theta with mg sin theta.
