9. A small piece of calcium metal is put into a small
trough containing water. There is effervescence and
white turbidity is formed.
(a) Name the gas formed in the reaction. How would you
test the gas ?
(b) Write an equation for the reaction.
(c) What do you observe when a few drops of
red litmus solution are added to the turbid
solution ?

Answer:
Chemical Equation : Ca + H₂O => Ca(OH)₂ + H₂
a ) The gas formed in the above reaction is Hydrogen gas. When a burning matchstick is brought near the mouth of the tube, the matchstick goes off with a pop sound. This is the test for the presence of Hydrogen gas in the tube.
b ) Calcium + Water ==> Calcium Hydroxide + Hydrogen Gas
Chemical Equation : Ca + H₂O => Ca(OH)₂ + H₂
c ) Metal Hydroxides are generally basic in nature. The white turbid fluid is Calcium Hydroxide which is a base. Hence when Red Litmus soln is added to the turbid, it turns blue indicating basic nature of the white coloured turbid.
