a) Why did Hari Singh think that Anil's job was queer?
Hari Singh thought Anil’s job was queer because he did not have a fixed source of income. At times he had to borrow; and at times he would lend. He often waited for his cheque. It appeared he wrote for a magazine. As soon as the cheque arrived, he would celebrate by spending it lavishly.
b) Bholi was a neglected child
Bholi was a neglected child. There were many reasons behind it. She was the youngest daughter of Numberdar Ramlal. When she was just ten months old, she had fallen off a coat which had affected her brain. As a result, she remained backward. At the age of two a severe attack of small-pox that had disfigured her badly. She learnt to speak quite late, at the age of five. And when she spoke, she stammered. Though her name was Sulekha, everyone just called her Bholi.
c) Why did mr.keesing call Anne 'an incorrigible chatterbox'?
Mr. Kessing called Anne 'an incorrigible chatterbox' because he was annoyed at her incessant talking in the class. He had warned her many times no to talk in the class while he was teaching, yet Anne could not resist the temptation to talk. In order to discourage her from chattering he gave her an assignment to write an essay on ‘A Chatterbox’.
Quite interestingly, Anne wrote quite a big essay in which she put forth arguments defending her chattering in the class. He had a good laugh reading the essay. However, when the class started again, Anne began talking again. In order to punish her he gave her another essay to write on ‘An Incorrigible Chatterbox’.
e) Why did Belinda tickle the dragon?
Belinda tickled him (Custard) very much to make him feel good. Belinda had four pets: Ink, the black kitten; Blink, the grey mouse; Mustard, the yellow dog; and Custard, the dragon. All the pets except Custard, were very clever. They made fun of him. The truth was Custard was very brave; but he was not conscious about his bravery. The other creatures pretended to be brave, but in reality they were not.
11. Ostentation and vanity often land people in trouble. Matilda is an apt example of this. Justify
It is a universal and time-tested truth that ostentation and vanity often land people in trouble. Matilda is an apt example of this. Wise men have always emphasized on the axiom ‘Cut your coat according to your cloth.’ There is much wisdom hidden in this cautionary proverb. However, people often fall prey to the temptations such as ostentation and vanity of the world. The Necklace is a wonderful story that teaches us the similar lesson. Matilda had been ambitious since beginning. She had excessive attraction for the rich society.
When her husband received invitation to the ball, she became abnormally excited about it. She went beyond her means to make arrangements for herself for the ball. She spent excessively on her dress. And for the jewellery, she thought of borrowing Madame Forestier’s necklace.
Unfortunately, the borrowed necklace was lost at the party. She and her husband had to face ten years’ grueling headships to pay for the replacement of the lost necklace. After ten years she came to know from Madame Forestier that it was just an artificial necklace.
If Matilda had not been so much lured by ostentation and vanity, she would not have faced all those hardships.
