Solution : if dipole moment of any compound is zero , then shape of compound will be symmetrical otherwise non symmetrical.
In other words, if any compound contains lone pairs then it will be non symmetrical.
Here dipole moment of water is 1.84D so it is clear that water molecule is not symmetrical. But it is linear or not, it will check with help of VSEPR theory.
As we know, molecular formula of water is H₂O
bond pairs = 2
Lone pairs = (6 + 2 - 2 × 2)/2 = 2
Here two bp and two lp so the shape of water molecule is angular not linear.
