Given:

A trader bears a loss of 25% by selling 40 needles for a rupee

To find:

How many needles should he sell for a rupee in order to earn a profit of 20%?

Solution:

The S.P. of 40 needles = Rs. 1

Loss% = 25%

∴ C.P. of 40 needles = \frac{100}{100 - L\%} \times S.P.   = \frac{100 }{100 - 25} \times 1 = \frac{100}{75}  = Rs. \:\frac{4}{3}

So,

C.P. of 1 needle = \frac{4}{3} \times \frac{1}{40} = Rs.\:\frac{1}{30}

Now, if the dealer wants to have a profit of 20% then,

The S.P. of 1 needle should be,

= \frac{100 + P\%} {100}\times C.P. = \frac{100 + 20}{100}\times \frac{1}{30}   = \frac{120}{100}\times \frac{1}{30}  = \frac{4}{100} = Rs. \:0.04

If the no. of needles sold for Rs. 0.04 is 1

Then, the no. of needles sold for Re. 1 will be = \frac{1}{0.04} = \frac{100}{4}  = 25

Thus, in order to make a profit of 20%, the dealer should sell → option (C)25 needles.
