Nutrients are needed by plants for their proper growth and development. The substances which act as a raw material for body building and maintaining its functions are know as minerals. Not all minerals are essential for plants. The mineral nutrients which play a physiological and structural role in plants and without which plants cannot complete their life cycle are know as essential elements.
17 elements are known to be essential elements. They are P K Ca C H O N S Mg Fe Zn Mn B Mo Ni Cu Cl.
Deficiency of any essential element causes disorders. For e.g: Deficiency of elements like Na Mo S K Zn Fe Mn Mg causes 'chlorosis' which is the yellowing of leaves.
Hence nutrients are very necessary for plants.
