William Shakespeare, popularly known as the “Bard of Avon” and also England’s national poet is the most fantastic and eminent poet and playwright in the English language the world has ever witnessed. Immortal plays like Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello and Macbeth have been beautifully written by this master storyteller. British drama is incomplete without the mention of Shakespeare’s comedy, romance, drama and tragedy. Here you will get to learn all about William Shakespeare, his famous love quotes, chronology of his drama and also popular sonnets of Shakespeare in Just Five Minutes. Here you can have a brief idea about this great literary personality in the history of English language and literature.

Who Was Shakespeare?

William Shakespeare by far is the greatest English writer in the world and has clearly marked the areas of literature, culture, art, theater, and film with his impeccable style of dramatization, playwright, story telling and poetic excellence.

He came to this world on April 26th 1564 and left us in the year 1616 on 23rd of April. He was born and brought up in Stratford upon Avon, a small country town. William Shakespeare was baptized on 26th of April in the year 1564 in the parish church Holy Trinity of Stratford upon Avon. His parents were John Shakespeare (c1530-1601) and Mary Arden (c1540-1608). He had four sisters and was the eldest of the four brothers. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, who bore him three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith.

The greatest irony about Shakespeare is that much has been published about his works but nothing much is known about his personal life, he remains a mysterious figure as far as his personal history is concerned. There are just two primary sources for information on William Shakespeare: his works, and various legal and church documents from the period of Elizabethan era. You will very obviously notice many gaps in this body of information, as a conclusion we are left with very little knowledge about Shakespeare the man.

Popular Sonnets By William Shakespeare

Sonnets are fourteen-line lyric poems, traditionally written in iambic pentameter – that is, in lines ten syllables long, with accents falling on every second syllable, as in: “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”. Sonnets originated during Italian renaissance and were introduced to England during the Tudor period by Sir Thomas Wyatt.

The themes of William Shakespeare’s sonnets are based on stories about a handsome boy, or rival poet, and the mysterious and detached “dark” lady they both love, covet and desire. The sonnets are divided into three clear parts: Sonnets 1 to 126 are referred to, or concern, a young man; Sonnets 127-152 are addressed to, or concern, a dark lady (dark due to the tone of her hair, her visage, and her personality), and Sonnets 153-154 are fairly free adaptations of two classical Greek poems
