A 10 kg block is placed on a frictionless table and connected to a 5 kg block by a string
that extends horizontally across the table over a pulley and down to the 5 kg block. What
is the acceleration of the blocks?​

Three blocks of 10kg, 5kg and 5kg are connected as shown in the figure.

We have to find acceleration of the blocks.

\star As per newton's second law of motion, force is measured as the product of mass and acceleration.

Mathematically, F = m a

  • F denotes force
  • m denotes mass
  • a denotes acceleration

★ Net force on the system :

Here only weight force of 5kg mass acts on the whole system.

➝ W = m₁ × g

➝ W = 5 × 10

W = 50N

★ Net mass of the system :

➝ M = m₁ + m₂ + m₃

➝ M = 5 + 5 + 10

M = 20kg

★ Acceleration of the system :

⭆ F = M × a

⭆ 50 = 20 × a

⭆ a = 50/20

a = 2.5 m/s²
