A 13m long ladder when set against the wall of a house reaches a height of 12m.How far is the foot of the ladder from the wall?

Let the ladder be AB=13m

Let the vertical height reached be AC=12m

Let the distance between the foot of the ladder and wall be BC= x meters

By Pythagoras Theorem,

(AB)^2=(AC)^2+(BC)^2

(13)^2=(12)^2+(x)^2

x^2=169-144

x^2=25

x = 5 meters

Therefore,the foot of the ladder is 5 m away from the wall.

the distance from wall to foot of ladder = base =?
by Pythagoras theorem
H²= B²+ P²
or, 13²= B²+ 12²
or, 169= B²+ 144
or B² = 169 -144
or, B²= 25
or, B = √25
or, B = 5m
therefore foot of ladder is 5m far from wall
